What the omega-3 index is
The omega-3 index (Harris & von Schacky, 2004) is the percentage of EPA + DHA among total red blood cell fatty acids — a blood-test value, not a score you derive from other labs. The first module simply adds the EPA and DHA percentages your panel prints. Example: EPA 2.1% + DHA 3.8% → index 5.9%.
The omega-6:3 ratio
Omega-6:3 = omega-6 ÷ omega-3 (both as % of fatty acids, same platform). Example: 32% ÷ 4.5% ≈ 7.1:1. The evolutionary biology literature estimates pre-industrial diets at roughly 2:1–4:1, while the modern Western dietary pattern is often estimated at 15:1–20:1 — the gap is mostly high omega-6 intake rather than low omega-3 alone.
RBC vs plasma — the platform changes the numbers
Fatty acid panels come in two flavors: red blood cell (RBC) membranes and plasma. The same person's omega-3 index will read differently on each platform, so reference bands (including the 4/8% scale) are only meaningful within the platform they were developed on. Compare your result against the same platform, ideally the same lab, over time — and ask which platform your report uses if it isn't labeled.
Evidence level & limitations
The 4% / 8% bands come from Harris's cardiovascular research convention, not an official guideline, and the omega-6:3 ratio bands follow literature convention rather than a published clinical standard. The cardiovascular benefit of raising omega-3 levels remains debated (see the Aung meta-analysis in the sources), so treat these bands as descriptive context for a blood-test number — a screening signal, not a diagnosis, and not a supplement recommendation.

How do I calculate my omega-3 index?
The index is EPA + DHA as a share of total fatty acids — your lab measures it; the calculator just adds the two percentages your panel prints (e.g. EPA 2.1% + DHA 3.8% → 5.9%). If your report prints a combined omega-3 index instead of separate EPA/DHA, enter it in the DHA field and leave EPA at 0.
What is a good omega-3 index?
Under Harris's research convention, below 4% is the low range, 4–8% intermediate, and 8% or above the range his group proposed as a cardiovascular-protection target. These are research conventions developed on RBC panels — a screening interpretation, not a diagnosis.
What should my omega-6 to omega-3 ratio be?
The evolutionary literature estimates pre-industrial diets at roughly 2:1–4:1, versus 15:1–20:1 for a typical modern Western diet. The 2–4:1 figure is a reference point from the literature, not a published clinical guideline — and the ratio is only comparable within the same testing platform.
My panel tested plasma fatty acids, not red blood cells — do the bands still apply?
No — the omega-3 index is defined on RBC membranes, and plasma levels run lower and track recent intake more closely. The 4/8% bands only apply to RBC panels. For a plasma result, read the trend and your lab's own reference range instead.
Does a high omega-3 index mean I'm protected from heart disease?
Not by itself. The index was proposed as a risk marker, but large randomized trials and meta-analyses (e.g. Aung 2018) have found inconsistent cardiovascular benefit from raising omega-3 levels — and a high index can reflect a fish-heavy or supplement-heavy diet. Treat it as one status marker among many, not a health guarantee.
