How it works

The formula

BRI = 364.2 − 365.5 × √(1 − (waist ÷ 2π)² ÷ (0.5 × height)²). It treats the body as an ellipse: waist sets the horizontal radius, half your height the vertical one, and the result reflects the ellipse's eccentricity — the "roundness". Because waist and height enter as a ratio, units cancel: inches with inches or centimeters with centimeters give the same number.

Why not just use BMI?

BMI uses weight and height only — it cannot tell fat from muscle and says nothing about where fat is stored. BRI replaces the scale with a tape measure: central fat around the waist is the metabolically active kind most strongly linked to insulin resistance and cardiovascular risk in cohort studies. In several analyses, BRI tracked visceral fat and cardiometabolic risk markers more closely than BMI.

Limitations — read this before your number

BRI has no official clinical cut-offs. The bands shown here are a readability aid based on published population distributions (US NHANES cohorts), not guidelines — different studies slice the ranges differently. BRI is a young, research-stage metric: it is less informative during pregnancy, in very muscular builds, and at height extremes, and no major medical body has adopted it for screening decisions. Treat it as one signal next to waist-to-height ratio, blood pressure, lipids, and glucose — never a verdict.

What is the Body Roundness Index?

BRI is a body-composition metric proposed by Thomas and colleagues in 2013. It combines waist circumference and height into a single number (typically ~1 to 12 in adults) that models body shape as an ellipse — the rounder the midsection relative to height, the higher the index. Research links higher BRI to more visceral fat and worse cardiometabolic risk markers.

Is there an official BRI cut-off or chart?

No. Unlike BMI (with its WHO 18.5/25/30 bands) or waist-to-height ratio (the 0.5 rule of thumb), BRI has no officially adopted cut-offs. Published studies describe population distributions and risk gradients, which is what the bands above summarize — they are a research-cohort reference, not a clinical standard.

How is BRI different from waist-to-height ratio?

Both use the same two tape measurements. WHtR is a simple division (waist ÷ height) with a widely cited 0.5 boundary; BRI wraps the same inputs in an ellipse model, which some studies find tracks visceral fat more closely — but it lacks WHtR's simple public-health cut-off. Can I use centimeters instead of inches?

Yes. The formula is unit-agnostic — waist and height just need the same unit, and the result is identical either way. Measure your waist at the navel, standing relaxed, at the end of a normal exhale.

Is a high BRI a diagnosis?

No. BRI is a screening signal, not a diagnosis. A higher reading is a prompt to look at the fuller picture — blood pressure, lipids, fasting glucose, and your symptoms — with a qualified practitioner, not evidence of any specific condition.

Where did BRI come from?

Researchers introduced it in 2013 as a geometry-based predictor of body fat and visceral adipose tissue. It drew wider attention after a 2024 JAMA Network Open analysis of US NHANES data found a U-shaped association between BRI and all-cause mortality — both very low and very high values tracked with higher mortality in that cohort.
